a: this Noe Valley parkway used to be a thirsty, patchy
dragstrip of grass. Now a collection of low water Mediterranean spacies
including lavenders, fountain grass and artemisia.
b: formerly part of a Sacramento rice field, I raised the bed with a
well draining mix, planted low water perennials, and mulched it. I only
needed to water it a handful of times this summer; it gets no irrigation.
c: in the Panhandle, a deck container garden. Plants kept in
containers exhaust their soil quickly, and are affected by the elements more
so than plants in the ground. I replaced department store annuals with
drought tolerant species and repotted old favorites in fresh soil.
d: a Castro deck border using low water perennials and native annuals,
including the Gilla featured here, with its purple puff ball flower cluster.
e: I carved this Noe Valley bed out of a mass of ivy, Mexican sage
and eucalyptus debris. I renovated the plants that the client wanted to keep,
and added colorful, low water perennials (I even kept a couple of the Mexican
sage). Most of these plants have the added advantage of not being appetizing
to snails.
and up in the corner... lovely California poppies, achillea and salvia. Sacramento.
